IKEA REASONABLE air purifier
The FÖRNUFTIG improves indoor air quality and promises to make your home healthier. It comes with a particle filter and an optional gas filter to purify the air of pollution, including odors, dust, smoke, pollen and chemicals. It is not yet possible to order and pick up at all, but the product pages are in any case online, so that we know what IKEA is planning. It is therefore also known what the replacement filters cost and how ‘smart’ this air purifier is.
IKEA makes it clear, for example, that you can use a smart plug to switch the appliance on and off. IKEA recommends its own TRADFRI smart plug, but it is of course possible with any other brand. You no longer have to physically press a button after switching on, but you will get the last set air speed. With a rotary knob you can choose from three speeds. At night you can put the air purifier in sleep mode, at a lower fan speed and a low noise level, so that you can sleep peacefully while the air is purified.
Movable
The IKEA FÖRNUFTIG air purifier can clean a room of 10 square meters. If the room is larger, you will need more copies. You can hang them on the wall or place them on the floor with the included stand. They are portable and, due to their weight of 3.5 kg, they are not too heavy. With their size of 31 x 45 centimeters, these air cleaners are also somewhat smaller than common brands such as Winix. The airflow takes place at the top, so you have to keep that side clear. An LED will illuminate when it is time to replace the filters. This is approximately every 6 months.
Originated from personal frustration
The air purifier was designed by David Wahl, product developer at IKEA. A few years ago, he faced a so-called ‘life event’, which made him more aware of the impact of air in the home on our health. “All homes contain particles of different sizes,” says the IKEA website, “and as we now spend more time at home, these particles can lead to allergic reactions and disrupted sleep, among other things.”
As it often goes: David still couldn’t find an affordable and stylish air purifier after a long search and therefore decided to make one himself.
With an air purifier you have to replace the filter regularly. At IKEA, a HEPA 12 particle filter costs € 4.99, while the gas filter costs € 9.99. This means that the prices are a lot lower than at Dyson, for example. The HEPA particle filter blocks dust, pollen and the like. According to IKEA, approximately 99.95 percent of the smaller particles are filtered. This concerns fine dust with a particle size of up to 2.5 µm.
The gas filter ensures that unpleasant odors such as smoke, cooking smells and gas chemicals are reduced. For example, cleaning agents, household products and interior materials such as floor coverings contain formaldehyde, which can be harmful.
