Apple’s score for 2020
Apple users are always happy with new hardware and software that is introduced annually. Yet we also like to complain if something does not work: if the battery drains quickly after an update, or if the device keeps crashing. Jason Snell, a veteran in the field of tech reporting, gives annual reports to Apple and calls in other Apple experts. This year he received 55 reviews, showing which products and services have improved the most in quality.
It is the sixth time that Snell has organized such a survey among people he has chosen himself. They were asked about 12 Apple-related topics and were given a grade on a scale of 1 to 5. They were also able to comment by category.
Not too surprising is the fact that almost everyone is enthusiastic about Apple’s activities in the Mac field. The score rose from 3.6 to 4.7. The quality of hardware was also rated well with a 4.5. However, a noticeable improvement is the quality of the software. 2019 was a dramatic year for Apple in that area and experts believe that it is finally well under control again. The question is whether it will stay that way. Apple has a habit of investing heavily in software quality one year and taking it easy the next year. It is quite possible that this year will be dramatic again.
The worst score was the Apple TV (2.1 points), but that is mainly because there was again no innovation and not so much because the hardware and software is bad. The graph below shows the risers and fallers, and it is noticeable that wearables fell quite a bit. The continuous improvement of the Apple Watch was appreciated, and the AirPods were also appreciated. But the experts couldn’t get their hands on it all for the AirPods Max. Those new headphones generated quite a few mixed reactions.
