Other storage on your Macintosh HD
If you’re looking at your Mac’s storage capacity, part of it will be a bar that says “Other.” At first glance, you cannot tell what these files are, which makes it very difficult to delete them. The bar with ‘Other’ storage can consist of several things. For example, it stores documents, plug-ins and the cache. These files are important to keep your Mac running smoothly, but if you’re not careful, this part can fill up quickly. Certainly if you have a MacBook with limited storage capacity, it may sometimes be necessary to slim down the amount with ‘Other’ storage. To do this, you will first need to find the Other category.
View other storage on your Mac
Here’s how you can see how much space is occupied by other storage:
- Click on the Apple logo at the top left of your Mac screen.
- Choose About This Mac> Storage.
- You will now see how your Mac storage is put together, including ‘Other’
It may take a while for the information to be visible. Now that you know how much space the other files are taking up, it may be time to do something about it. Keep in mind that your Mac doesn’t save these files for nothing. So think carefully about which files you delete. For example, you can clear the cache data of old apps that you no longer use, but you should be more careful with temporary files used by active software.
Manually delete cache of Mac apps
Clearing the cache of Mac apps you don’t use that much anymore works like this:
- Open the Finder.
- Click in the menu Go> Go to Folder.
- Indicate that you want to go to ‘~ / Library / caches’ or ‘~ / Library / caches’ (without quotes of course).
- Choose the folders you want to delete and click Move to trash.
This way you can also quickly open and delete the files from your Downloads folder. However, if you want to delete the backups of older iDevices, you will have to go through a different step-by-step plan. You can read more about how to delete old backups from iPhones, iPads and iPods in the tip below.
